Should the Government invest in nuclear energy?

Electricity is vital for the developed world, powering everything from lamps to laptops, kettles to cars and the UK Government has committed to securing a low carbon energy supply for years, thanks to signing the Kyoto Protocol in 1995 and the Climate Change Act of 2008. It pledged to reduce emissions by 80 per cent in 2050, from 1990.

There are already 15 nuclear reactors in the UK, generating more than a fifth of our electricity. However, almost all of these are due to close by 2030, so there is a need to replace them and to do so now.
